But after a few seasons in the self-perpetuating hot seat, so to speak, I decided to slow down the collective pulse rate of my new designs and take a long, deep breath. I was in need of a counterpoint. These days I’m completely captivated by the multitude of blue hues swelling in the depths off the Baja coastline. I love splashes of cobalt, turquoise and lapis lazuli, and the look of crisp teal pillows on a long-lined sofa. I’m intrigued by how exquisitely sky blue and robin’s egg work for upholstered bed frames and bedding textiles.
The tonal variations on what is essentially the dark side of the color wheel calm the mind, soothe the soul, and paradoxically invigorate the spirit. I love to use local artisanal fabrics in every blue and blue-green out there—from sea foam to cerulean and all the indigo-inspired allies. I like jewel-like blue tiles on floors, stairways, fountains, and backsplashes. Who doesn’t appreciate the relief from the ochres and sands of the desert when it encounters an oasis of tourmaline glass or celadon mosaic? Not only do quieter shades invite us to rest the retina, they actually flatter everyone and everything else in the room. Blue is the color of contemplation, but the aquamarine iridescence of the coastline at dusk inspires a flight of fantasy like no other. Throw in the soothing thunder of crashing waves and you’re definitely not in Kansas anymore.
All the blues and greens I use in my interiors are gorgeous in and of themselves, but they function best as sly accomplices to the real showstopping inspirations of my Mexican and Central American designs: the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. Talk about an excellent wingman; the endless vistas over placid or churning seas are unmatchable. So I make every effort to incorporate them into my interior work: I remove walls, expand windows, elevate beds and even entire rooms for ultimate access to an ocean view.
Sapphire blue pillow fabrics and bean green glazed patio pottery, aqua chaise lounges, and even pool table felting and festive glassware are especially dazzling when close to the sea. It’s all a crescendo of coolth, an invitation to rest and gaze, and then head out for a swim or grab a board and paddle out past the breakers.
